The Kenya National Youth Service (NYS) is one of Kenya’s most recognized government institutions, established in 1964 with a mission to train, discipline, and empower the youth of Kenya through paramilitary training, skills development, and national service.

In 2019, following the enactment of the National Youth Service Act, 2018, the NYS was transformed from a state department into a fully-fledged semi-autonomous state corporation and a Uniformed and Disciplined Service with the status of a body corporate. The NYS currently operates two major training campuses:

The NYS Strategic Plan FY 2023/2024–2027/2028 sets an ambitious target of progressively increasing the annual youth intake to 100,000 recruits by the 2027/2028 financial year, a commitment personally reiterated by President William Ruto during the 89th NYS Pass-Out Parade. In 2026, the institution is on track toward that goal, with two separate recruitment exercises running simultaneously.

The Two Recruitment Tracks in 2026

The NYS 2026 recruitment exercise runs on two distinct but parallel tracks. It is critical to understand the difference before applying, as the requirements, process, and outcomes differ significantly.

Track 1: Volunteer Servicemen & Servicewomen Recruitment

The Kenya National Youth Service officially announced a nationwide recruitment exercise for NYS Volunteer Servicemen and Servicewomen to be conducted throughout the Republic of Kenya from Monday, 16th March 2026 to Saturday, 21st March 2026, starting at 8:00 a.m. daily, across all sub-counties.

This is the largest and most open of the two recruitment tracks. It targets Kenyan youth who want to serve their country, gain paramilitary discipline, and develop life skills that improve their employability and character.

Volunteer Recruitment Requirements

All prospective volunteer applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:

Be a Kenyan citizen and a resident of the respective Sub-County of recruitment.
Be aged between 18 and 24 years.
Have attained a minimum mean grade of D (Plain) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Produce the original National Identity Card and academic certificates, and submit one set of photocopies at the recruitment centre.
Possess a valid Police Clearance Certificate (Certificate of Good Conduct).
Be willing to undergo a medical examination during and after the recruitment exercise.
Be prepared to undergo Basic Paramilitary Training.
Be ready to offer voluntary service to the Nation in any part of the Republic of Kenya.

Special Considerations

Orphans who meet the above requirements will be given special consideration upon presentation of valid documentary proof, such as parents’ death certificates or burial permits.
Persons with disabilities are encouraged to participate at their respective sub-county centres, provided they can withstand the prescribed physical training.
Applicants with demonstrated sports skills and talents will have an added advantage.

Track 2: Privates & Cadet Officers — Formal Employment (750 Positions)

Separately from the volunteer intake, the NYS announced the recruitment of Privates and Cadet Officers into formal, permanent and pensionable employment positions across multiple professional and technical categories. This recruitment was advertised in a notice dated Tuesday, March 3, 2026, with a submission deadline of March 18, 2026.

A total of 750 positions were advertised — 250 Cadet Officer posts targeting degree holders, and 500 Private posts across technical and trade categories. This is a significant formal employment opportunity for young Kenyans seeking long-term careers in a uniformed government service.

Cadet Officer Positions (250 Posts)

Cadet Officers are the professional tier of NYS staff, requiring university-level qualifications. The 250 advertised positions target degree holders across the following disciplines and fields:

General Requirements for Cadet Officers

Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field from a recognized university.
Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya (integrity, ethics, and leadership).
Must possess a Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
Must have a KRA PIN Certificate and valid National Identity Card.

Private Positions (500 Posts)

Private positions target individuals with vocational, technical, and craft-level qualifications. These are hands-on roles that keep the NYS operational on the ground. There are two sub-categories within the Privates intake:

Technical/Trade Privates

These positions require specific vocational qualifications:

Must be in possession of a National Trade Test, Craft, or Diploma Certificate in relevant courses from a recognized institution.
Trades covered include: Electrical Installation, Plumbing, Carpentry & Joinery, Masonry, Welding & Fabrication, Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Building Construction, Catering & Food Production, Fashion Design & Garment Making, and ICT-related trades.

General Duty (Graduated Volunteer) Privates

These positions are for former NYS volunteers who have already completed their service:

Must possess a minimum of KCSE grade D+ (Plus) and above.
MUST have a valid NYS Discharge Certificate — proof of completed voluntary service.
Senior Service Man/Woman (Grade I and II) certificate required for the General Duty Cadre.

General Requirements for All Privates

Be in possession of a valid Kenyan National Identity Card (ID).
Be in possession of a valid KRA PIN Certificate.
Meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
Be medically fit.
Certificate in Computer Application Skills from a recognized institution.

General Requirements for All Applicants

Regardless of the track or category, all NYS 2026 recruitment applicants must satisfy the following baseline criteria set by the Public Service Commission and the NYS Act, 2018:

Be a Kenyan citizen.
Satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on Leadership and Integrity.
Have a Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kenya.

Training: What to Expect After Recruitment

Volunteer Basic Paramilitary Training (6 Months)

All successfully recruited volunteers undergo a mandatory six-month basic paramilitary training programme at either the NYS Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil or NYSTTI in Naivasha. Training is rigorous and non-combat in nature. Key components include:

How to Apply: Step-by-Step Guide

For Volunteer Recruitment (Track 1)

The volunteer recruitment process is entirely physical — there is no online application. Follow these steps:

Identify your Sub-County recruitment centre from the official schedule published by NYS (see Section 10 below).
Gather all required documents: Original ID, KCSE Certificate, Certificate of Good Conduct, and any supporting documents.
Make one photocopy of each document to submit at the recruitment centre.
Report to your sub-county recruitment centre by 8:00 a.m. on your county’s scheduled date. Arriving early is strongly recommended due to the large number of applicants expected.
Register at the centre, present your documents, undergo initial screening, and complete the medical check.
Await your calling letter specifying your reporting date and training centre (Gilgil or Naivasha).

For Privates & Cadet Officers (Track 2)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I apply for both the volunteer intake and the Privates/Cadets formal employment?

Yes. The two tracks are separate processes. However, the formal Private (General Duty) positions require an NYS Discharge Certificate, meaning you must have already completed voluntary service before qualifying for that specific category.

I have a KCSE grade below D Plain. Can I still apply?

No. The minimum academic requirement for the volunteer intake is KCSE D (Plain). For Privates, the minimum is D+ (Plus). There are no exceptions to these academic requirements, though equivalent qualifications may be considered in specific technical categories.

I missed the March 2026 recruitment dates. Will there be another intake?

Yes. NYS conducts annual recruitment exercises. Given President Ruto’s commitment to scaling the annual intake to 100,000 recruits, future recruitment exercises are expected. Monitor the official NYS website and government portals for announcements.

What happens if I fail the medical examination?

Candidates who do not meet the medical fitness standards will not be admitted into training. The medical examination is a mandatory, non-negotiable part of the recruitment process.

Do I need to be from the specific sub-county to attend its recruitment centre?
